How did I know this was discontinued? The price tag was the easy indicator but as we’ve covered before, a store discontinuing a product doesn’t always mean the brand has discontinued it.

A little bit of legwork goes a long way. If you go to Neutrogena’s website and search for this specific product, you’ll see they have it marked as officially discontinued. A lot of brands like Neutrogena have dedicated pages for their discontinued products. Makes it super easy to verify.

First and foremost, it hasn’t even been a year yet but I’m grateful every week when I sit down to write these so I just want to say thank you for being a part of this newsletter.

As you can see, the price tag makes it easy to spot that this product has been discontinued. But remember, a store discontinuing a product and the brand discontinuing a product are two different things. A store might drop a product because it’s not selling well at that location, because they’re making room for new inventory, or because they’re cutting down on SKUs. That doesn’t always mean the brand has stopped making it.

But if you take the extra step and check Burt’s Bees’ website, this product doesn’t appear to be listed. That’s a good sign it’s been discontinued by the brand.

Another product to be on the lookout for at your local pharmacies and grocery stores!

Tip: When it comes to beauty and personal care products: always check expiration dates before buying. If you can’t find an expiration date on the packaging, you can use sites like checkcosmetic.net (no affiliation) to look it up by batch code. Or you can always call the brand directly with the lot number.

Most people go to estate sales looking for books, electronics, and toys. But old bottles of discontinued products like Weiman, Murphy’s, and other brands that have been sitting under someone’s sink for years can be worth $20-50+ on eBay (Let me be clear - eBay only.) Especially if it’s in the original packaging. People clean out their garages, basements, and closets and a lot of this stuff ends up on folding tables for $1-2 because the seller has no idea what it’s worth.

As you can see in the sold listings, some of these have even been used and they’re still selling.

Weiman Lemon Oil is also something to keep an eye out for at old hardware stores. Same strategy we’ve covered before. The older the store, the better your chances of finding products like this still sitting on the shelf.

That’s right. $70+ but what else do you notice in the top sold listing?

The word “discontinued.”

Sellers are using that keyword in their titles to signal scarcity and justify premium prices. You can flip that strategy around and use it to your advantage.

Using eBay as a Research Tool

You can use eBay to search for discontinued products and discover items to be on the lookout for during your sourcing runs.

The process:

1. Search “discontinued [brand name]” or “discontinued [product category]”

2. Filter by Sold listings to see what’s selling (not just listed)

3. Check the sold prices to see if margins are worth it

4. Look at multiple sold listings to see the demand

This gives you a BOLO list of products that:

• Have the potential to be discontinued (sellers are stating it)

• Have demand (they’re selling on eBay)

• Show you current prices (so you know profit potential)

This works across any brand or category. Try searching:

• “Discontinued shampoo”

• “Discontinued detergent”

• “Discontinued spray paint”

• “Discontinued [your favorite brand]”

You’ll discover products you never would have thought to look for.

eBay is telling you what’s discontinued and what customers will pay for it. Use that information. Spend 15 minutes searching discontinued products in categories you source, check the sold listings, and add them to your BOLO list.

If you’re not familiar, Dollar General runs clearance events a few times a year where all clearance items get an additional 50% off the sticker price. That means items already marked down 25%, 50%, even 70% off get cut in half again.

This is the first clearance event of 2026 and stores have been sitting on post-holiday inventory, toys, and discontinued products for months now. The shelves are loaded. Here’s how to make the most of it.

That’s Boraxo Powdered Hand Soap. Another product you can add to your BOLO list when you hit a local grocery store or hardware store.

If you like hunting these products, here’s a tip: The older the store, the better.

Mom and pop hardware stores, small town grocery stores, the places that haven’t updated their inventory systems in years. These are the spots where products like this sit on shelves long after they’ve disappeared from the big retailers.

So how do you find these stores?

Use Google Maps. Search “hardware store” in your area and skip the big chains. Look for the independent, locally owned spots. I like to check out the photos on the listing before I go. You can usually tell from the pictures whether a store has been around for a while. Old signage, cluttered, dusty aisles, hand-written price tags. Those are beautiful signs in my eyes.

You’re not going to find Boraxo at Home Depot. But that dusty hardware store 20 minutes outside of town that’s been open since 1985? That’s where you find BOLOs like this.

The Price Makes More Sense Than You Think

I know the question is going to come up again. Why would someone pay $40 for a bottle of dishwasher detergent?

Let me reframe this.

You’re spending your time, effort, and mileage to go out and find these products. You’re buying them, listing them, packing them, and shipping them. All so a customer can have their favorite product arrive at their doorstep from the click of a button.

You’re providing an avenue for customers to still find their favorite products after a company decides to pull them. You’re providing value. The customer doesn’t have to drive around to six different stores hoping to get lucky. They don’t have to settle for a replacement that doesn’t work the same. They search eBay, find exactly what they want, and pay the price that makes sense for them.

And that price factors in everything you did to make it happen. The gas, the time spent scanning shelves, the listing, the packing materials, the trip to the post office. That $40 covers the convenience of still being able to get it at all.

Some of these customers have the extra income and that premium is a no-brainer for them. Others have been burned by the replacement products and decided it’s worth paying up for the one that actually works.

Either way, the sold listings speak for themselves.

Why the Demand?

This was one of Resolve’s few powder versions and now discontinued. People still love using it and it must be effective because they’re willing to pay $50 for it.

There’s something about the powder type that creates loyal users who refuse to switch to spray or foam alternatives.

This is another one of those products worth keeping in the back of your mind during every sourcing trip when you hit up local hardware or grocery stores. You’re not making special runs just to hunt for this specific product, but when it shows up on a shelf, you know exactly what it’s worth.

That’s the power of building your BOLO list. The more products you’re aware of, the more opportunities you spot naturally without having to scan hundreds of products.

This Week’s BOLO: ARGO Laundry Starch

• Retail cost: Around $2 per box

• Selling for: Around $30-40 per box on eBay

Proof its still out there

I’ve mentioned ARGO starch before and honestly thought most of the supply would be gone by now.

But what tells me these are still out there: over 100+ sold listings on eBay in recent months.

That means people are still finding this laundry starch.

WHERE TO LOOK

• Old country grocery stores (rural areas)

• Mom & pop hardware stores

• Old roadside gas stations (the ones that double as mini stores)

• Family pharmacies

While I don’t go out of my way specifically looking for this starch, I always keep my eyes open when I go on hiking trips or travel through rural areas. I’ll stop at old country stores and gas stations to scan for products just like this.

You should too. This ARGO starch is just one example. These places have other discontinued products that nobody’s found yet.

Sometimes the best finds aren’t in the places everyone else is looking.
